Calling all nature lovers near Owings Mills, MD! Are you looking for a local nature getaway? Maryland is home to dozens of state parks and these are some of the best ones near you.

1. Soldier’s Delight Natural Environmental Area

Located about ten minutes away from Owings Mills is Soldier’s Delight, a 1,900-acre park that is also designated as Maryland Wildland, meaning it is protected by the Maryland Wildlands Preservation System. The park’s protected status is due to the area’s uncommon soil, rocks, minerals, and insects, and because it is home to dozens of rare, threatened, and endangered plant species. If you’re looking for a unique natural spot nearby, this is a must-see.

2. Patapsco Valley State Park

Running along the Patapsco River and covering over 16,000 acres of land, Patapsco Valley State Park is so large that it is divided into five areas. It includes sprawling natural trails as well as various developments from throughout the years, like a swinging bridge and abandoned train tracks. The park welcomes all kinds of recreation including hiking, biking, horseback riding, and more. With so much to explore, you’ll want to return several times to experience it all.

3. North Point State Park

North Point was once the site of Bay Shore Amusement Park, and now you can see that very same amusement park reclaimed by nature. Come to this park for a fascinating cross between the natural and man-made worlds, hike a trail used by soldiers in the War of 1812, and have a picnic overlooking the Chesapeake Bay.

4. Rocks State Park

It is not difficult to figure out why this park bears the name “Rocks.” Here you can access 855 acres of rocky forests, see some astounding natural rock formations, and marvel at Kilgore Falls, Maryland’s second highest vertical drop waterfall at 17 feet high. Go fishing, hike the trails, or laze in an inflatable tube on Deer Creek.

5. Susquehanna State Park

This park has some of the most popular mountain bike trails in Maryland and it is a great place for all sorts of outdoor activities like fishing, hunting, boating, and camping. The park also includes a museum and several historical structures including a gristmill and a mansion. Come for the beauty of nature and stay for the rich history of the area.
