If you happen to be looking for something both fun and educational to do with the family this weekend, a jaunt to the museum might be exactly what you need. Visiting a museum is a great way to exercise the mind while you learn more about the past or the world around you, so we’ve made a list of the best museums around Owings Mills, MD for you to check out!

1. Irvine Nature Center

We begin our list with something that might stretch the definition of a museum, as many of its activities and attractions are located outdoors! Founded in 1975, Irvine Nature Center is a non-profit nature educational facility comprising 211 acres of wilderness. It features winding nature trails, an outdoor classroom, an authentic Native American site, an aviary with owls, and a large butterfly house, so it goes without saying that this is your place to connect with the natural world!

2. American Visionary Art Museum

CNN called this museum “One of the most fantastic museums anywhere in America.” The American Visionary Art Museum features a rotating set of exhibitions, so you’re likely to discover something new every time you visit. What we especially love about this museum is that it doesn’t confine itself to traditional definitions of art. It features kinetic sculptures powered by human strength and exhibitions like “The Science and Mystery of Sleep” that allow visitors to explore their minds and imaginations.

3. Fire Museum of Maryland

Just a short drive away in Lutherville, you’ll find the Fire Museum of Maryland. The most striking thing you’ll notice when you arrive is the huge firefighting boat in the parking lot, where you can learn everything about what it’s like to fight fires on the open sea. Inside the museum itself, you can find artifacts and equipment that give a glimpse into the lives and work of firefighters from yesteryear. There are also activities for children on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 11 in the morning.

4. Baltimore Streetcar Museum

Founded in 1966, the Baltimore Streetcar Museum is an engaging place to interact with something that people may not think twice about: public transportation. The museum features trains and boxcars as well as old streetcars that visitors can go inside and really feel like they’re being taken on a trip back in time. Children especially have an amazing time seeing the driving controls and pretending that they’re streetcar conductors, but we have to admit that it’s fun for adults too!

Whether you’re in Owings Mills or in the surrounding Baltimore area, we hope that this list will help you make some exciting plans for you or for your whole family. We love museums, and supporting local museums is an important way to help preserve local culture and history.
