1. Enjoy a Picnic at Northwest Regional Park

The 322-acre Northwest Regional Park is just the place to spend a day with your kids, enjoying various recreational activities and a family picnic. The park has four ball diamonds, three athletic fields, loads of large open spaces, and a playground. The largest portion of the park is naturally wooded, and you and your family can explore the beautiful surroundings and stroll along the Locust Run stream on the paved walking paths and nature trails.

The park also has excellent spots for a family picnic with scenic picnic areas and three pavilions. Contact the park office for pavilion reservations and information on the park’s family programs and events. Northwest Regional Park is on the west side of 4515 Deer Park Road in Owings Mills.

2. Discover the Sights and Sounds at the Irvine Nature Center on the Scenic Nature Trails

Irvine Nature Center is ideal for teaching your kids to appreciate nature and enjoy being outdoors. Here they can climb over fallen tree stumps, run through the mud, and play in the sand. Eight miles of trails wind through 211 acres showcasing Marylands natural landscape filled with indigenous plant life and resident songbirds. Hike to the Native American Site for a unique glimpse at the structures, dwellings, and tools used by Native Americans.

Visit the Robert L. Mardiney Aviary, home to native raptors, owls, black vultures, kestrels, and hawks, and take a stroll through the magnificent Woodland Garden with more than a hundred species of indigenous Maryland trees, wildflowers, shrubs, grasses, and ferns. Pop in at the Butterfly House and explore the wetlands on the trails. The center’s indoor exhibits include live animal exhibits and a children’s indoor playroom.

Information and Hours

Irvine Nature Center is at 11201 Garrison Forest Road and offers programs and classes throughout the year. The center is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. November to March and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April to October. The center is closed on Mondays.

3. Experience the Magic of the Live Stage Performances

Take your kids to experience the magic and excitement of live theatre at the Peggy and Yale Gordon Center for Performing Arts, also known as the Gordon Theatre. The professional theatre showcases high-quality and engaging stage productions, including interactive children’s shows, family events, dance performances, magicians, puppeteers, and acrobats. The beautiful theatre has 550 comfortable seats and world-class acoustics.

Gordon Outdoors

Another part of the theatre experience is enjoying family films under the stars at Gordon Outdoors, a drive-in venue with one of the largest movie screens in the state that offers movie nights and multiple virtual art and culture experiences. Gordon Theatre is at 3506 Gwynnbrook Avenue on the campus of the Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCC, and tickets can be purchased online or at the Box Office during pre-show hours.
